CSPAP Pre Convention--Free Training from the WYO Dept of Health
Join WAHPERD member and trainer Kim Hunt and the Wyoming Department of Health, Chronic Disease Prevention and Maternal and Child Health Programs with Denise Padilla and Charla Ricciardi,  for a FREE  Comprehensive School Physical Activity Program Workshop. CSPAP is a multi-component approach by which school districts and schools use all opportunities for students to be physically active, meet the nationally-recommended 60 minutes of physical activity each day, and develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence to be physically active for a lifetime. A CSPAP reflects strong coordination and synergy across all of the components: physical education as the foundation; physical activity before, during, and after school; staff involvement; and family and community engagement.

Fly Fishing Healing Waters

Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing (PHWFF) began in 2005 serving wounded military service members at Walter Reed Army Medical Center returning from combat in Iraq and Afghanistan. Since then, PHWFF has expanded nationwide, establishing its highly successful program in Department of Defense hospitals, Warrior Transition Units, and Veterans Affairs Medical Centers and clinics.

Project Healing Waters brings a high-quality, full-spectrum fly fishing program to an ever-expanding number of disabled active military service personnel across the Veterans Affairs Healthcare System, in Military Hospitals and the Warrior Transition Command. We focus our resources wherever the need is greatest and expand our partner base in the process. PHWFF has become recognized as an innovative leader and model in the field of therapeutic outdoor recreation for the disabled, through its successful application of the sport of fly fishing as a rehabilitation tool.

Taking the Guessing Out Of Cardio Assessing
Beth Kirkpatrick is the pioneer of using heart rate monitors to transform the physical educators' testing for cardio fitness. You will see real students at the PE4life Academy in Grundy Center, Iowa, actually being tested. Because of the technology, all students are provided in real time their continuous heart rate that includes the revolutionary protocol of recording heart rates during the pre exercise phase where all students are lying down, the warmup phase, the actual cardio test, and the recovery phase. At the end of class, all students, parents, and the teacher, will be wirelessly sent the heart rate printout that provides the visual evidence of their heart rates, immediately following class time. There is no downloading by the teacher! Especially fascinating, is the teaching in real time by Rick Schupbach, throughout the testing. You will also see the teaching of the data and exercise physiology using their own heart rate results, that occur the following day.

During this session, participants will learn the history and culture for the Haka. The Haka is an ancient Maori war dance performed by a group of people with vigorous movements to intimidate the opponent. There are various forms of the Haka, but the more popular Haka is performed by New Zealand's National Rugby team prior to every match. It is used to hype up the players and the crowd, and to intimidate the opposing team. It is not a typical dance that students learn in a PE unit, but it is very easy to learn and can be used to increase student morale.

Execute for Success
In Execute for Success, Dr. Howard Gauthier, a Professor in Sports Science at Idaho State University, explores the elements that exist in proper and effective execution of an activity. Execution is the process of effectively using skills, strategies, and tactics to successfully perform your activities and endeavors. But why is it important to execute? In the sports world, proper execution helps you to perform your best. This leads to fewer turnovers and mistakes, which leads to success. In turn, success leads to increased self-confidence and happiness.

Advocacy! Light Breakfast
The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) identifies school health and physical education (HPE) as part of a student’s well-rounded education, giving every HPE teacher an opportunity to elevate their program and gain support from their school and local community. ESSA requires broad stakeholder engagement in order to implement comprehensive and effective state and school district plans.  health and physical literacy can be a life-changer for all children.  It’s a simple but powerful belief that drives everything we do.Through our ongoing initiative, 50 Million Strong by 2029, we demonstrate our commitment to put all children on the path to health and physical literacy through effective health and physical education programs.

How to Expand Our Role and Effectiveness as Health Educators
As a nation we are spending 3 trillion dollars a year on health care. In spite of the fact that 70% of the disease we experience is preventable very few of those dollars go towards education and prevention. Unfortunately, funding for the people who could be the most effective in solving this problem is continually cut back. Health educators are one of the most valuable, yet underutilized resources to fill this gap. This presentation will explore a holistic approach to enhancing our effectiveness as health educators and how to make a greater difference in the lives of those we serve.

Coaching Boys Into Men and Athletes as Leaders
Coaching Boys Into Men (CBIM) is a violence prevention program for athletic coaches desinged to inspire them to teah thier young male athletes about the importance of respect for themselves, others, and women and girls.Athletic coaches play an extremely influential and unique role in the lives of young men, often serving as a parent or mentor to the boys they coach. Because of these special relationships, coaches are uniquely poised to positively influence how young men think and behave both on, and off, the field.  FUTURES’ Coaching Boys into Men (CBIM) program facilitates these connections by providing high school athletic coaches with the resources they need to promote respectful behavior among their players and help prevent relationship abuse, harassment, and sexual assault. For more than a decade, the program has been implemented in communities across the U.S. and around the world. From Sacramento and Dallas, to India and South Africa, the program’s messages have proven universal.

The CBIM curriculum consists of a series of coach-to-athlete trainings that illustrate ways to model respect and promote healthy relationships. The CBIM card series instructs coaches on how to incorporate themes associated with teamwork, integrity, fair play, and respect into their daily practice and routine.

CBIM first launched in 2001 as a national public service announcement campaign in partnership with the Advertising Council. The television, radio, print, and online ads leveraged over $123 million in donated media and catalyzed grassroots efforts in communities across the country. CBIM has since grown from a broad awareness and action campaign into a comprehensive violence prevention curriculum for coaches and their athletes.
